San Gimignano art and artistic routes

Art lovers can find traces throughout the town of the numerous civilizations which have contributed to the history of San Gimignano.
In medieval times San Gimignano played an important role as patron of the arts and hosted illustrious individuals such as Dante Alighieri.
If you love history and works of art, you should not miss the artistic itineraries of San Gimignano.

In the town’s “Collegiata” main church, consecrated in 1148, one can admire many art works of the Sienese school: Bartolo di Fredi and the School of Memmi’s “Old and New Testaments”, Taddeo di Bartolo’s “Last Judgment”, Ghirlandaio’s Santa Fina Chapel, Benozzo Gozzoli’s “San Sebastian”, Jacopo della Quercia’s wooden “Annunciation” figures and the stone sculptures by Giuliano and Benedetto da Maiano.

In the Town Hall with its lovely courtyard, the Hall of Dante holds the important ‘Maesta’ of Lippo Memmi while the Civic Museum and Picture Gallery contains works by Filippino Lippi, Pinturicchio, Benozzo Gozzoli, Domenico di Michelino, Pier Francesco Fiorentino, Sebastiano Mainardi, Lorenzo di Niccolo di Martino, Coppo di Marcovaldo.

From the museum you can also admire and access the towns main tower, the 54 meter Torre Grossa, built in 1311.

The Museum of Sacred Art holds an important collection of religious artwork, including paintings, tables, silver pieces, and religious vestments belonging to many churches and convents that once existed in San Gimignano.

The Archeological Museum houses a small but very interesting collection of Etruscan, Roman and Medieval pieces.

The Pharmacy of Santa Fina is reconstructed within this museum, complete with beautifully decorated ceramic and glass containers and an amazing array of odd, ancient pharmaceutical remedies.
